Expanding specialist access to Botswana’s western region (2024, Ghanzi Primary Hospital): 183 outpatient consultations, 18 surgical procedures and 78 mammograms through Medlane’s mobile unit — cutting histopathology turnaround from about eight weeks to ten days.

An outreach focused on expanding specialist access to Botswana's western region, combining outpatient specialist clinics, an operating list, and mobile breast screening.

A significant element of this outreach was diagnostic: by partnering with Medlane's mobile mammography unit and Diagnofirm Laboratories, the team was able to shorten histopathology turnaround dramatically, which in turn shortened the anxious wait between biopsy and treatment decision.

Project Objectives

  • Extend specialist surgical services to the Ghanzi District
  • Provide breast screening through a mobile mammography unit
  • Shorten diagnostic turnaround times for histopathology
  • Strengthen referral pathways from the west of the country

Achievements & Outcomes

  • 183 outpatient consultations delivered
  • 18 surgical procedures performed
  • 78 mammograms completed through Medlane’s mobile unit
  • Histopathology turnaround cut from roughly eight weeks to ten days

Impact

Reducing histopathology turnaround from about eight weeks to ten days changes the clinical picture entirely for patients awaiting a cancer diagnosis — treatment can begin while the disease is still more treatable.
