Access to specialist surgical care remains a challenge for many communities. Through multidisciplinary teams of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied professionals — working alongside District Health Management Teams and local facilities — BSS delivers consultations, surgery, screening and mentorship where specialist services are limited.
Each project below brings specialist surgical care closer to the communities that need it.
Flagship project
A multidisciplinary specialist outreach (28–30 November 2025) that brought general, orthopaedic, dermatology, neurosurgery, paediatric and plastic surgery teams together to deliver care closer to the Boteti community — 174 specialist consultations and a range of theatre procedures, from breast and general surgery to paediatric cases.
Expanding specialist access to Botswana’s western region (2024, Ghanzi Primary Hospital): 183 outpatient consultations, 18 surgical procedures and 78 mammograms through Medlane’s mobile unit — cutting histopathology turnaround from about eight weeks to ten days.
Our 2023 outreach (6–7 October, Selebi-Phikwe Government Hospital) reviewed 81 patients through specialist clinics, performed 17 minor procedures and provided breast screening and biopsy support with partners including Medlane Health Care and Diagnofirm Laboratories.
A purpose-built paediatric theatre funded by KidsOR and locally championed by our paediatric surgeon, equipped for children’s needs in a child-friendly environment. The project eases pressure on Marina’s theatres and improves outcomes for the country’s youngest patients.
